Water is one of the most important natural resources. It makes up about 74% of the Earth. It would not be wrong to say that water gives life to almost all creatures living on earth.

Yet, this lifeline is under heavy manipulation by Earth's inhabitants in the form of water pollution. This environmental pollution is one of the three main types of pollution which are soil pollution, air pollution, and water pollution.

Estimates show that this type of pollution will claim most lives in the form of deaths from the disease. About fourteen thousand people are affected by diseases caused by water pollution every day. Countries with high populations such as India and China are facing a shortage of clean drinking water. This problem is not limited to developing countries. Even developed countries are facing this problem to a large extent.

There are two types of water pollution, but both are harmful. These categories of water pollution include surface water and groundwater. The difference between them is only in the place of contamination. One is above ground level and easy to detect, while the other is on the ground and difficult to control.

If a body of water contains impurities in the form of anthropogenic contaminants and is not suitable for drinking, it is referred to as polluted. Many factors contribute to water pollution. This includes both natural factors and human intervention.

Natural factors that affect water quality are storms, volcanoes, earthquakes, and algal blooms. Human factors include dumping toxic wastes into water bodies, polluting soil with pesticides that later enter water bodies, and spilling waste into such bodies in the name of waste disposal. A wide variety of chemicals that are waste products from factories also contribute to this problem.

There is a natural mixture of minerals in water bodies that contribute to the richness of the water. These minerals include calcium, iron, manganese, and sodium. Yet, any change in these minerals that may occur as a result of human intervention leads to an imbalance of the regulated minerals. Higher or lower concentrations of these minerals can endanger aquatic life.

Too, man tends to change the ratio of dissolved oxygen in the water by throwing various types of waste into it, such as plastic bags. Other materials that affect this ratio are plants, such as grass and leaves. Debris outside the water world can interfere with the passage of light in water bodies. This disturbance can lead to the clogging of fish gills and impaired plant growth.

Many chemicals that humans introduce into water bodies are toxic. Waterborne diseases can be caused by these toxins. Too, these impurities can change the pH of impure water. This can result in a change in temperature and electrical conductivity.

There are three different methods for determining the level of pollution in a particular body of water. These are physical testing, chemical testing, and biological testing. In the physical method of testing water pollution, scientists use temperature, turbidity, and solids concentration.

The third type of testing uses living organisms to determine how healthy the water system is.
