The next wave of marketing was just as great. The idea was introduced that if you smoke you will lose weight. reach for a smoke instead of sweets and in a few years, you will be as slim as you always dreamed.
Unfortunately, the main way cigarettes cause weight loss is through cancer. Bad taste jokes aside, if you smoke instead of eating, then yes, you will burn fewer calories.
But are you losing weight?
I also observed that most smokers were overweight, so why is that?
There are two reasons. As a smoker, you expose your liver to more than 4,000 nasty chemicals with each cigarette. Your liver is very busy trying to deal with these chemicals and thus becomes a little less efficient with its other job of breaking down fats.
As a result, you retain a little more fat each day than you otherwise would. And only a little is enough. If you gain ½ pound per week, that's 130 pounds or 59 kg over five years.
You may not agree with this, but... So as a smoker, it doesn't make sense to eat healthily and exercise because you're not taking good care of yourself.
Sure there are exceptions, I've treated a vegan yoga teacher for smoking, but those healthy types are a very small minority. Most self-care people don't smoke, and if they do, they'll climb over broken glass to quit.
